Evolution is false #3: The Silver Bullet to Evolution

A werewolf is a mythical creature – a human that can turn into a wolf. One of the only weapons that can allegedly hurt a werewolf is a silver bullet. This has led to the saying ‘silver bullet’ when describing a situation where one weapon can defeat a seemingly powerful opponent.

In my opinion, DNA is a silver bullet to The Theory of Evolution.

What is DNA?

DNA is a complex molecule in the cells of all living things.[1] It contains information to build and maintain an organism.[2]

For example, as you were developing inside your mother’s womb, the genetic material (DNA) you received from your parents made you into a human being and determined your unique features – eye color, hair color, facial features, etc.

While the English alphabet has 26 letters, DNA has four chemical bases that serve a similar purpose for producing information: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). The manner in which these molecules are assembled determine a specific code for each organism.

Silver Bullet Reason #1 – Information

The first reason DNA refutes evolution is it contains information. Think about that for a second. As you are reading this blog, you are seeing a bunch of squiggly lines called letters. But there is something more than just the physical aspect of these letters – there is a message. Based on how the letters are assembled, there is information.

All scientists recognize that DNA contains information. But what is the best explanation for information in living things? There are two possibilities:

  1. GodAn intelligent source. A divine being created the physical structure of organisms and inserted information into them to build and maintain new life.

  2. NatureAn unintelligent source. This suggests that information somehow arose randomly from physical stuff. This does not seem to be rational. However, if you assume that life only comes from natural causes (excludes God as an option), then you have to choose this option by default, no matter how counterintuitive (see Blog #2 of this series).

Since information is by nature immaterial, how can it come from matter? Good heavens – let’s be reasonable! Let me offer a few of quotes in support of God being the best explanation.

  • “According to the information laws, every piece of information requires a sender.”[3](bold added)

  • Every piece of information is intentional.”[4](bold added)

  • “Scientifically, we can define information as a coded message containing an expected action and intended purpose.”[5](bold added)

It is clear that information has intent, purpose and meaning; therefore it requires a sender with intellect. Materialism (atheism) cannot account for this in DNA. How can matter and energy create information with intent or purpose? Material stuff does not think or have intention![6] Information comes from minds; so it makes sense that DNA comes from God.

How much information is in DNA? A lot!

The human genome has two sets of 3 billion individual ‘letters.’[7](bold added) That’s a massive amount of information. Evolutionists Richard Dawkins admitted that even an amoeba (a single-celled organism), has information in its DNA equivalent to 1,000 sets of Encyclopedia Britannica.[8] Given that amount of information, it is highly unlikely DNA arose by chance in nature.

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft Inc., recognizes the complexity of DNA: “DNA is like a computer program but far, far more advanced than any software ever created.”[9] If the computer code (software) that runs your computer, phone, etc. is extremely complex and developed by intelligence, God is the clearly the best explanation for a code a far more advanced.

Silver Bullet Reason #2 – Mutations

The second reason DNA refutes evolution is that the math does not work regarding mutations.

When a new organism is created, changes can occur to the DNA – mutations. A mutation is an error in the copying of information in DNA. It is similar to copying a book and misspelling some words. Evolution contends that sometimes these mutations may change an organism. Although some changes could harm the organism, evolutionists believe that some may eventually benefit an organism. Evolutionists claim that enough changes may actually produce a new species.

The problem is the vast majority of changes to DNA are either neutral or harmful. In other words, the ratio of neutral or harmful (deleterious) mutations versus beneficial mutations is way too high for evolution to work. It is far more likely that mutations will kill or deteriorate an organism way before it evolves into a new species. Consider the following quotes regarding this math:

  • According to scientist Walt Brown, “Almost all observable mutations are harmful; some are meaningless; many are lethal.”[10](bold added)

  • According to scientist and geneticist J.C. Sanford, “I have seen estimates of the ratio of deleterious-to-beneficial mutations which range from one thousand to one, up to one million to one. The best estimates seem to be one million to one(Gerrish and Lenski, 1998).”[11](bold added)

Based on these estimates, any species would degrade or die before evolving into a new species.

Let’s consider an illustration to clarify this important point. In scientist J.C. Sanford’s book Genetic Entropy, he uses transportation.[12] Take the instruction manual for creating a red wagon. If we copy this manual many times and make some errors, will it eventually become an instruction manual for an automobile, airplane or space shuttle? NO! It is far more likely it will degrade into gibberish. While God has allowed for variation within species to adapt to their respective environments, the species will degrade way before it changes to a new species.

Summary Point:

  • DNA is a silver bullet to evolution – information comes from intelligence and the math for mutations doesn’t work.
